Nothing But “Yummy-ness”: Family Holiday Dinner

I was not kidding when I blogged last month that I have chefs in my Family. It’s not any of their profession but one would never know the better. I have a very large Family. From the northeast to the southeast, my Family who lives in different states did not disappoint their perspective Family for their holiday dinner. The Family buzz is there was not a dissatisfied palate in any of the homes. They took pictures for me. Get ready! The photos will make you hungry. Seriously!
My Grandson could not resist tasting the icing on the Red Velvet Cake.  We encouraged him to go for it! Children must taste the icing when they have a sweet tooth and just because they have an urge to touch the cake; it’s inevitable. 😊

One of my sisters in MD started Christmas Day with baking homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast for her Family. She would’ve had to bake two pans of the rolls if I had been there. 😉

Family in the Carolinas served turkey as one of the dinner meats. The perfectly browned, falling off the bone turkey was prepared by Honey Baked Ham. It was one of the best turkeys that we’d ever had.  Bravo, Honey Baked Ham! 👏🏼

My Grandson helped his Mom bake cookies for Santa. He spread the icing on them and added sprinkles on top. This is their Mommy/Son holiday tradition. ❤️

Family in the Carolinas prepared mac and cheese amongst many dishes. As usual, it was so yummy! ☺️

My sister in GA prepared candied yams, one of the starring dishes, for her family. 😋

Carolinas Family: Rice, Lima Beans & Collard Greens were anticipated. We knew that they would be so delicious—from experience. 😁

GA Sister: Ham is one of those meats that must be served during a holiday dinner. She baked it perfectly. I wish I had been there! 👏🏼

One of my sisters in MD made “Creamy Garlic Parmesan Brussel Sprouts With Bacon”. Wow!

Beauties! My nephew-in-law deep fried the cornish hens.  Oh I could taste them just looking at the picture. 😊

MD Sister:  She’s one of the phenomenal bakers in our Family. She and my sister in GA bake superb pies.

I’m blessed to have extraordinary cooks in my Family who don’t cook just to feed their Family but because they really love cooking. Do I have a love for cooking like that? Hmm...not quite. 🙃 I do love eating their cooking! They need taste testers.  ☺️

I hope your holiday meal was just as wonderful with your Family!

📯Enjoying The 2018 Holidays

My idea of enjoying the holiday season is a lot like any other time of the year: being grateful for life, spending quality time with Family and friends, sharing good meals, watching college and professional games on TV, going to the theatre for a matinee movie, laughing a lot, and sharing my Blog Page.

People In Leadership Roles But Are Not Leading

LEADERSHIP: “the action of leading a group of people or organization”
LEADER: “the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country”

I noticed that a few Internet definitions for Leader and Leadership didn’t include any descriptive words without searching further—words like exemplary leader, impactful leadership and not even good leadership. The assumption is that one does not come without the other.  There are so many people in leadership roles of various capacities within corporations, small businesses, government, nonprofit organizations, schools (secondary and collegiate levels), and churches. There’s a disturbing breakdown of how leadership should be in many instances. The world has so many “leaders” yet fewer are leading responsibly and effectively. Shouldn’t there be a pause for concern? Yet, so many of us go about our day as though leaders will change like metamorphosis or accept things as they are.

The concept of leaders and leadership is interesting. The expectation is that leaders will possess the qualities and skills that exemplify good leadership.  But is that always the case?  Often times, we have a window view or an up and close personal experience with people who give us cause to wonder how could they had ever gotten the role and if it was a bad judgment call by people who hired or elected the person, then the next question would be, why is that person still in the position? Why must others suffer in masses because of someone else’s toxic, poor leadership?  Well, the answer can be complicated. It’s also fixable....unfortunately, not immediately in all circumstances. Sometimes, there’s even a rotation of poor leadership in the same organization. It can appear like a bad case of the flu that carries a bacteria that never dies, even when the season changes.

Take a look at Good Leadership qualities. We already know what bad leadership looks like. Perhaps, this list will train new eyes and stimulate older eyes to be more selective the next time around when choosing a leader. Poor leadership can destroy a business or any organization, and it can cause so much damage that it would take years to repair.

An effective leader is a person who does the following:

  1. Creates an inspiring vision of the future.
  2. Motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision.
  3. Manages delivery of the vision.
  4. Coaches and builds a team, so that it is more effective at achieving the vision.
Problem: “Poor leaders can have a negative impact on employees and might even damage the company’s bottom line. Bad leadership affects your company’s ability to retain employees and lowers employee morale, motivation and productivity. Understanding the traits of poor leaders can help you avoid leadership pitfalls and strengthen your leadership abilities.”
Solution: Never hire, appoint, vote for anyone for a position whose history includes poor decision-making, dishonesty, selfishness, unfairness, and discrimination of any kind. It may take some probing but due diligence is more than necessary to select a good leader. * STOP placing people in leadership roles just because you owe someone a favor, have a relationship with their parent, uncle or aunt, or because they are a member of your sorority or fraternity, goes to your church, best friends with your spouse, or just because s/he has so-called connections or because they’re your son or daughter. All of those are frivolous reasons that most times cause more harm than good. Place people in leadership roles because they simply are qualified and will catapult a team to more greatness!   -Goya Spry

Mind Tools, a resource that over 27 million people use, stated the folllwing:

Note:

Leadership means different things to different people around the world, and different things in different situations. For example, it could relate to community leadership, religious leadership, political leadership, and leadership of campaigning groups.
We cannot assume that managers are good leaders. One can often have nothing to do with the other. However, good leaders can be great managers.

COMING BACK HOME

⭐️Today, I’m dedicating my blog page and the song, Coming Back Home, to all of those who strayed away from Jesus and realized that “home” is in the arms of the LORD.  None of HIS followers should turn away from HIM, no matter your life journey...not ever. The LORD is our shepherd, and we will not go wrong if we keep HIM at the head of our life as our Savior.

🎤Bebe Winans & Brian NcKnight:  “Coming Back Home”
Took some time to come around
Realize how I let you down
Been too late for sorry now
My pride got in the way
Yes it did
I thought I had it all figured out
I needed time away to work it out
And now that I've learned what it's all about
And all I need is you in my life
So I'm coming back home
Home, where love is waiting for me
Been gone much too long
This is where I want to be
So I'm coming home
Coming home
'Cause home is where I belong
Somehow I lost my way
Mistakes I made I have to pay
It hurts to know still today
That I wasted so much time
And after all is said and done
There's more to life than having fun
Ain't no doubt, you're the one
And all I need is you in my life
So I'm coming back home
Home, where love is waiting for me
Been gone much too long
This is where I want to be
So I'm coming home
Coming home
'Cause home is where I belong
Just to be in your arms is like heaven to me
Your love, your love is all that I need
So I'm coming back home
And I hope you forgive all my wrong
So I'm coming home, coming home
'Cause home is where I belong
So I'm coming back home
Home, where love is waiting for me
Been gone much too long
This is where I want to be
So I'm coming home
Coming home
'Cause home is where I belong

Beyond What I See: Wisdom

🐛🦋 To see beyond what’s in front of you, being a visionary is quite the asset. A visionary does not have a supernatural apparition. A visionary, as the dictionary defines it, is someone who thinks with imagination, innovation and wisdom.

Trailblazer Remembered

*Prepare to read a lengthy blog because I choose not to abbreviate the long, well-lived life of a Trailblazer.  Her 103 years of life, many of them spent in service in the U.S., deserves celebrating. So who is the lovely, high-spirited lady that I make reference to? Just remember while reading; it’s not Black History Month. But it is history [period].

⭐️The first Black American Woman to serve active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1945 was a champion for service. She helped lay the groundwork for the civil rights movement, and she is none other than Dr. Olivia Juliette Hooker.

“Dr. Hooker was an American psychologist and professor. She was the last known survivor of the Tulsa race riots of 1921, and the first African-American woman to enter the U.S. Coast Guard in February 1945. Hooker became a SPAR (Semper Paratus Always Ready), a member of the United States Coast Guard Women's Reserve, during World War II, earning the rank of Yeoman, Second Class during her service. She served in the Coast Guard until her unit was disbanded in mid-1946; she went on to become a psychologist and a professor at Fordham University.”

After retirement, age 87, Dr. Hooker continued volunteering her service by joining the Coast Guard Auxiliary at age 95.  Her tenacity and commitment did not age as she did. During her illustrious life, Dr. Hooker received numerous awards. Amongst them, President Barack Obama recognized her service during a commencement ceremony of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He recognized not only her coast guard service but her legacy as well. Dr. Hooker proved that service is just another word for “heart”. Where a person serves is a direct reflection of where their heart is. Dr. Hooker certainly more than served well as a citizen of the United States Of America. She served the people in her country.

Legacy of The Trailblazer:  Dr. Hooker received the American Psychological Association Presidential Citation in 2011. In 2012, she was inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame.
On February 9, 2015, Kirsten Gillibrand spoke in Congress to "pay tribute" to Hooker.
In the same year, the Olivia Hooker Dining Facility on the Staten Islandcoast guard facility was named in her honor.  A training facility at the Coast Guard's headquarters in Washington, D.C. was also named after her that same year.
On May 20, 2015, President Barack Obama recognized Hooker's Coast Guard service and legacy while in attendance at the 134th Commencement of the United States Coast Guard Academy.
On November 11, 2018, Google honored her by telling her story as part of a Google Doodle for the Veterans Day holiday.

Dr. Hooker received an education from Ohio State University, Columbia University and the University of Rochester, where she earned her PhD.

{Dr. Hooker passed away on November 21, 2018 of natural causes in her home in White Plains, NY.}

🏀NBA Legends Want A Piece Of The NBA Pie

NBA Legends left the ball on the court; now they want a different type of notoriety. Legends want a piece of the pie. And why shouldn’t they? They helped build the NBA organization to the multi-billion dollar industry that it is; not to mention, they love the game!

Only a few NBA legends, such as Michael Jordan, Grant Hill and Shaquille O’Neal, own or part-own a team in the U.S.  This is about to change.  The road is being paved for more legends to own a team.  Progression is inevitable. Players are making a “slam dunk” with no apologies!

Let’s start with Grant Hill.

🇺🇸The Whole Man

⭐️President George H.W. Bush, the 41st President, lost his daughter to leukemia when she was 3. When a Secret Service agent's child had leukemia, President Bush shaved his head when the child lost his hair during cancer treatment.  Americans and people around the world may not have always agreed with the late president’s decisions, including both sides of the political aisles—Republicans, Democrats and Independents too. However, we must admit that many of his decisions were representative of support for others (all walks of life); yet often times unmarked. Let’s look at the “whole man” and not just a fraction of him. We’d desire the same honor and respect.

🍬THE INFAMOUS CANDY EXCHANGE: George & Michelle

{Sweet Gesture At George H. W. Bush’s -The 41st President- State Funeral In Washington, DC}

Loyal Friendship

George W. Bush & Michelle Obama started a tradition last year that is indicative of kindness and respect even though they represent different political parties. Genuine friendship has no biases. We want our friends & family to be loyal and kind to us no matter who's around. Right? But are we being for them what we want them to be for us?  If people change how they behave around you, treating you differently based on the "audience", they are not your loyal friends.

NOTE:  Loyal friendship travels on a two-way street.

⭐️JADA PINKETT SMITH & Facebook Watch

🎞You’d have to be living under a large boulder if you haven’t heard of Red Table Talk.  Just by chance that you haven’t heard about the show, allow me to give you the 411 about the ingenious idea  for Jada Pinkett Smith to partner with Facebook (Facebook Watch) to present a web television talk show on the world’s largest online network on a weekly basis.  Red Table Talk is a huge success and it began less than six months ago. Jada is joined at the red table with her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Norris and Jada’s cerebral (use of intellect rather than intuition)18-year old daughter, Willow Smith—the two most important women in the actress’s life. The show opener debuted on May 7, 2018.  “It was announced a month later that Facebook ordered 13 additional shows.” The new episodes started on October 22, 2018.  The show was receiving great reviews and it didn’t hurt that over a million viewers were watching regularly with anticipation for the next episode. The show has jaw-dropping episodes and the conversations include no filter.

Voilà!  Now that you know that a whole lot of people think it’s a hit show, here are some details that will prepare you for one of the most talked about shows today:

📽 First, You need a Facebook account. Searching online for episodes will disappoint you. There is no recording (such as YouTube) of a complete episode—only a short clip. A complete episode’s running time is 16-27 minutes.
🎞 The shows are recorded in the family home.
📽 Table Discussions Have Been About: Motherhood, Surviving Loss, Divorce, Drug Addiction, Friendship, Domestic Abuse, Racism, Ending Rumors About The Smiths, including the untruth that they practice Scientology, and much more.
🎞 Celebrities Leah Remini, Cesar Millan, Sheree Fletcher (Jada’s husband’s ex-wife), Tiffany Haddish,Toni Braxton, Jane Elliott, Jaden Smith (Jada’s son), Cookie Johnson and son EJ Johnson, and Gabrielle Union have had intimate conversations at the red table on previous episodes. Will Smith, Jada’s husband, bravely sat at the red table during one of the episodes and like any other guests, his emotions became raw as he talked about divorce was not an option for him and Jada and their decision to redefine their marriage. Brad Pitt is scheduled to join the ladies for one of the episodes.
📽 Jada, Adrienne and Willow do not hold back with having conversations about their own past struggles. There is one evident common denominator for the three generations of women; they don’t hold back their tears while sharing their personal experiences. They keep it real. They share the good, bad and the ugly with their audience. Sometimes, they (themselves) are surprised at one another’s reveal.
🎞 Jada concludes each show with reading and responding to a few questions received by viewers. Then, she closes with words of encouragement and wisdom.

 {Three Generations of Women}  Photo by Stan Evans

{The “red table” brings out raw emotions and a candor from guests that keep viewers glued to the screen.}

Check out the show! It’s unlikely that you won’t find it intriguing and perhaps relatable at times.

🏆 Red Table Talk has been nominated for the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Daytime Talk Show. I think it just may be the first of its kind nominated for such a prestigious award that airs via web television—Facebook Watch network.

🏈DESHAUN WATSON aka DW4

What characteristics define G.O.A.T.?

DESHAUN WATSON, QB for the Houston Texans, just may be known as the Greatest Of All Time {G.O.A.T.} some day.  Deshaun is definitely well on his way—making history already in the NFL. Well he made history with his college team so no surprise. His second season playing pro football after leading his alma mater (Clemson University - Clemson, SC) to a National Championship title PLUS graduating from Clemson in three (3) years are impressive enough, proving his commitment to the game of football and academic focus. Now, he’s impressing the NFL and Texans fans.

Quarterback Rankings

The Texans have played 12 games so far with a 9-3 record. What’s more impressive is the nine wins have been back-to-back after losing the first three games. Nine back-to-back wins?  What a winning streak! What a team of determined pros to have a better season than before!

{Deshaun and his team are having an impressive 2018 season, stacking up back-to-back wins.}

{A QB touches the ball on every offensive play, and when Deshaun sees an opportunity to score, he takes the ball to the end zone without hesitation.}

{Houston Texans’ QB, Deshaun Watson, pauses to show respect for the team owner before start of game. Bob McNair passed away on November 23, 2018.}

💐{Mr. Robert “Bob” McNair was the founder and owner of the Houston Texans and was known as a longtime, generous philanthropist.  Condolences to Mrs. McNair, the McNair Family and the Houston Texans organization.}
